Germany Dreams to Hold The Title of Euro 2012

Germany go into Euro 2012 among thefavourites, but this time it has less to do with past successes and more to do with their modern game that has won over legions of new fans.

The three-time European champions have been without a major trophy for 16 years, despite being tagged favourites at most tournaments since 1996.

This time round, however, their Euro group rivals, - Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark - will come up against one of the youngest, fastest and most furious German teams in at least a generation.

Players like Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil, Sami Khedira and goalkeeper Manuel Neuer quickly made a name for themselves at the 2010 World Cup with a dazzling display of fast-paced football and lethal finishing that saw them crush England 4-1 and Argentina 4-0 en route to a third-place finish.

The vast majority of coach Joachim Loew's players were just youngsters when Oliver Bierhoff, now the team's manager, scored a golden goal to hand Germany the Euro trophy in 1996.

Many of them were mere toddlers when Franz Beckenbauer coached the national side to their last of their three World Cup wins in 1990.

"It is clear that Germany go into such tournaments always as favourites," Loew said. "But it is also clear that there is not just one favourite, not just Germany. I have often said there is Spain, Italy, France, they are all among those capable of winning it."

BIG WINS

On a good day Germany have shown they can beat any defence, having won all 10 of their Euro qualifiers and scored victories in friendlies over big names like Brazil, Netherlands and Uruguay in the past months.

"We have learned to take possession of the ball as quickly as possible. Our game has become more modern," said captain Philipp Lahm, at 28 one of the oldest in a team that also includes teenager Mario Goetze. "Of course, Spain remain the favourites."

Defensively, Germany have more options than ever with Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels adding steel in the centre of defence where Arsenal's Per Mertesacker looks to be in danger of losing his starting spot after damaging his ankle and foot playing for Arsenal in February. Dortmund's Marcel Schmelzer is also set to make the squad.

Loew has an impressive luxury of choice in midfield where Khedira and Bastian Schweinsteiger have forged an efficient holding partnership.

Goetze, 19, and Real Madrid playmaker Ozil have combined well with Toni Kroos, bringing skills that mesh perfectly with the pace of Lukas Podolski, Thomas Mueller, Marco Reus and Andre Schuerrle on the wings.

Lars and Sven Bender have also worked themselves into contention with the twins available for all-round midfield assignments.

GOMEZ GOALS

Bundesliga top scorer Mario Gomez has blossomed into a formidable weapon over the past two seasons with the Bayern Munich forward scoring at will in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Forward Miroslav Klose will also vie for the starting spot in Loew's 4-2-3-1 system, looking to crack Gerd Mueller's all-time Germany goal record of 68. Klose has 63 goals from 114 international appearances.

"We have the luxury of having almost every position covered twice," Loew said.

A 2-1 defeat by France in February did little to dampen enthusiasm in the football-mad country who see their team ready to win yet another trophy.

Friendlies against Switzerland and Israel ahead of the Euro tournament in Poland and Ukraine are aimed at fine-tuning preparations with a training camp in Italy set for May 11.

What could pose problems for Loew is that more than a dozen of his players will be in action at the German Cup final on May 12 in Berlin as Bayern Munich face Dortmund.

Ozil, Khedira and Klose will also not be able to join them from the start as the leagues in Spain and Italy will not have finished yet.

With Bayern Munich also in the Champions League final on May 19 Loew will have to wait even longer for some eight players including Lahm, Gomez and Schweinsteiger, although Badstuber is suspended for the game against Chelsea.

"I would be happy for Bayern to reach the final, but it would affect our preparation," Loew said before Bayern knocked Real Madrid out of the Champions League to reach the final.

"It would be ideal to start Euro preparations with the full squad," he said, although a Bayern victory could be the first part of a golden double this summer.

Do You Believe? 560,000 cancer deaths during 2010 in INDIA Bwt 30-69yrs

The risk of dying from cancer is nearly the same in rural and urban areas and the highest among the least educated, according to a study described as the first to provide nationally representative estimates of cancer deaths across India.

The study, by researchers at the University of Toronto, Canada, and collaborating Indian institutions, challenges a common perception that cancer in India is primarily a disease of urban and educated people, put at risk through new-age habits that lead to obesity and other lifestyle-related risks.

"Cancer is not a disease of the rich and the educated as it has sometimes been portrayed," said Prabhat Jha, the director of the Centre for Global Health Research. "The cancer death rate is two times higher in the least educated than in the highest educated adults."

The study, published today in the journal Lancet, suggests that tobacco-related cancers have contributed to over 40 per cent of cancer deaths in men and nearly 20 per cent of cancer deaths in women. It estimates that India had 560,000 cancer deaths during 2010.

The study has also confirmed that cancer is a major cause of adult deaths in India with more than 70 per cent of cancer deaths occurring among people between the ages of 30 and 69 years, or their productive years.

"Tobacco use may help explain the observed link between education and cancer deaths," Jha told The Telegraph. Tobacco consumption, particularly the habit of chewing tobacco, tends to decrease with higher levels of education.

Cancer epidemiologists say the study is the first to provide estimates of cancer deaths in rural and urban areas. All previous national data on cancer mortality was based on 24 registries run by the Indian Council of Medical Research but only two of these are in rural areas.

The findings are based on the Million-Death-Study ' an effort to document the causes of child and adult deaths and their risk factors through the process of "verbal autopsies" ' individual narratives obtained from household members of the circumstances of deaths.

The most common causes of cancer deaths in men were oral, stomach and lung cancers, while the cervical, breast and stomach cancers were the most common causes in women, according to the Million-Death-Study.

"There is a strong correlation between tobacco and low education levels," said Rajiv Dixit, professor of epidemiology and a member of the research team at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, a collaborating institution in India. "While it is also possible that those who are better educated also get themselves diagnosed and treated early, we need to investigate how diet or nutrition might also change with education levels," Dixit said.

Jha said the similar cancer death rates in urban and rural areas was a "big surprise".

Cancer researchers in India had long assumed that incidence of cancer was twice higher in urban areas than in rural areas. But this was based on two rural registries.

The new study has shown that 95 men per 100,000 die from cancer in rural areas and 102 in urban areas. In women, the rates were 96 in rural areas and 91 in urban areas. "These figures may also reflect the absence of diagnostic facilities in rural areas," Dixit said.

The study has also shown strikingly sharp variations in cancer mortality across states ' the highest in the Northeast and the lowest in the neighbouring states of Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand.

"This is still a big puzzle ' tobacco may explain only part of this pattern, but we really do not understand why the Northeast has a cancer mortality nearly four times higher than the rates in states like Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand," Jha said.

"We need to understand whether diet or infections may be playing a role in the Northeast," Dixit said. "For instance, we observe high rates of stomach cancers in the Northeast, and there is high meat and pork consumption -- these could be contributing factors. But we also observe high rates of nasopharyngeal cancers in the Northeast. This cancer is sometimes associated with the Epstein Barr Virus -- we need to investigate the presence of this infectious agent there."

Prius c Hybrid Synergy Drive Propulsion
The Prius c’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system integrates the operation of components that include a gasoline engine, an electric motor within a Continuously Variable Transaxle, a nickel-metal hydride battery, a power control unit (inverter), a DC-DC converter, a step-up converter and a hybrid control computer. The hybrid control computer governs the seamless application of gasoline engine and electric power depending on driving demands and selected drive mode.


The Prius c relies on a SULEV (Tier 2 Bin 3) rated 1.5-liter in-line, four-cylinder gasoline engine that utilizes an Atkinson cycle to increase efficiency. This engineproduces 73 horsepower and 82 lb.-ft. of torque, contributing to a total hybrid system output of 99 hp.

A strong earthquake of 7.1 magnitude Hits Chile (South America)

A strong earthquake of 7.1 magnitude on the Richter scale was felt at 19:38 (local time) on Sunday in central Chile, as indicated by the U.S. Geological Survey, and created great alarm among the population.

The epicenter, with a depth of 30 kilometers was recorded northwest of the city of Talca, the capital of Maule region, one of the most affected by the earthquake of February 27, 2010.

The BBC World Service partner in Chile, Rodrigo Bustamante, said the National Emergency Office (Onemi) of the country ordered the precautionary evacuation of the coastal towns between the regions of Valparaíso and Bío.

Moments later, the evacuation was discarded.

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy (SHOA) said the quake "is not eligible to generate tsunami."

In the Chilean capital (Santiago) many people ran out into open places because the tremor lasted for at least 40 seconds.

Hitherto unknown damage caused by the tremor.

Some of our readers indicated through the BBC page on Facebook that mobile systems are still collapsed and vibration "was very strong."
